As most of you that own and drive 98.5-02 24 valve 5.9L Dodge Cummins equipped with the Bosch VP44 injection pump already know, the VP44 is extremely susceptible to failure caused by lack of fuel supply. This is due to the factory fuel pump's inability to supply fuel to the injection pump in the Bosch recommended range of 13-18 psi.
Prior to 2003, the factory Carter lift pumps were mounted on the side of the block below the fuel filter. This caused the pump to absorb a lot of heat and subjected it to intense vibration. Years later Dodge recognized the problem and began selling update kits which involved a new pump that was installed in the fuel tank. This in-tank conversion is a poor alternative because it is still a low pressure design with roughly 12 psi when brand new. Nowhere near the Bosch recommendation. For those of you seeking longevity or the ability to supply increased fueling demands of your truck through chips, injectors, or high performance VP pumps we strongly recommend our Fuel Boss Mechanical Belt Driven lift pumps or we offer electric lift pumps from both FASS and PureFlow/AirDog.
