Why Does a Grid Heater Need a Heavy-Duty Relay?

Grid heaters are high-current electrical components.

Trying to route the full heater load through a conventional toggle switch or other low-current control device is not appropriate.

Instead, the control switch activates the relay, and the relay handles the high-current connection between the battery and grid heater.

This allows the heater to receive the electrical power it requires while the driver's control circuit only carries the much smaller amount of current necessary to activate the relay.

Keep high-current cable runs as short and direct as practical, protect wiring from heat and abrasion, and make sure all high-current connections are clean and properly secured.

A powerful grid heater paired with undersized wiring or poor electrical connections isn't a good combination.

Important 24V Sure Start Note

When configuring a 24V Sure Start Universal Grid Heater installation, follow the specific wiring requirements for the heater configuration being used.

The Sure Start installation may require multiple relays and separate electrical feeds, so do not assume that one DTS05-SW3 relay is sufficient for every universal installation.
