Why Does the Water-in-Fuel Light Stay On?

The factory engine-mounted fuel filter housing contains a Water-in-Fuel sensor that communicates directly with the truck's electrical system.

When the housing is removed during the installation of an aftermarket filtration system, the sensor is unplugged. Since the ECM no longer detects the sensor, it interprets this as a fault and illuminates the Water-in-Fuel warning on the dash.

Nothing is actually wrong—the truck simply recognizes that the factory sensor is no longer connected.

The answer depends on the model year.

On 2007.5–2012 trucks, the engine-mounted housing contains the factory WIF sensor. If you've replaced that housing with an aftermarket filtration system, the original sensor is no longer present, making a fooler necessary to eliminate the warning light.

On 2013–2018 trucks, Ram added a frame-mounted primary fuel filter and water separator equipped with its own Water-in-Fuel sensor. This front fooler only replaces the signal from the removed under-hood sensor—the rear factory WIF sensor continues to operate normally, so your truck can still warn you if water is detected in the primary separator.
